Hinzu kommen mit Philipp Kohlschreiber und Jan-Lennard Struff zwei sehr erfahrene Spieler, so dass wir insgesamt eine sehr gute Mischung haben und ich mir sicher bin, dass wir wie in den letzten Jahren auch eine super Stimmung in der Mannschaft haben werden", so der 45 Jahre alte Kapitän weiter.
Alexander Zverev verzichtet auf die Teilnahme
Die deutsche Nummer eins Alexander Zverev hatte bereits zu Jahresbeginn den Verzicht auf die Teilnahme am reformierten Davis Cup-Finale verkündet. Der Traditionswettbewerb wird in diesem Jahr erstmalig im neuen Format mit einer Qualifikationsrunde und einer Finalwoche ausgetragen. Deutschland hatte sich Anfang Februar in Frankfurt mit einem 5:0-Erfolg über Ungarn das Ticket für Madrid gesichert. Damit kämpfen die DTB-Herren nun vom 18. bis zum 24. November als eine von 18 Mannschaften um den traditionsreichen Titel.
Ab dem Viertelfinale werden Partien im K.O.-System gespielt
In der "Caja Mágica" - so heißt die Austragungsstätte im Stadtteil San Fermín - wird zunächst eine Vorrunde in sechs Dreiergruppen gespielt, wobei jede Länderbegegnung aus zwei Einzeln und einem Doppel über zwei Gewinnsätze besteht. Die Gegner der deutschen Mannschaft in der Gruppe C heißen Chile (bislang keine Begegnungen) und Argentinien (Bilanz: 2:7). Die Gruppensieger sowie die zwei besten Gruppenzweiten erreichen das Viertelfinale. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt werden alle Partien im K.O.-System ausgespielt.
