Der gebürtige Schweizer Martin Schmidt sei bekannt für seine besondere Einschätzung von Bundesliga-Spielen und stand bei seinen Trainerstationen immer für mutigen Offensiv-Fußball.
Der im Wallis in Naters geborene Schmidt war zuletzt bis zum 25. Spieltag der vergangenen Bundesliga-Saison Cheftrainer beim FC Augsburg und musste nach einem 0-2 gegen Bayern München seinen Stuhl räumen. Zuvor war der 53-Jährige zwischen 2017 und 2018 Trainer beim VfL Wolfsburg. Seine erste Trainerstation in der Bundesliga hatte Schmidt beim FSV Mainz 05 und schaffte in der Saison 2015/16 mit den Mainzern erstmalig in der Vereinsgeschichte die Qualifikation für die UEFA Europa League. Born in Naters in the Valais, Schmidt was head coach of FC Augsburg until the 25th matchday of the last Bundesliga season and had to vacate his chair after a 0-2 defeat to Bayern Munich. Prior to that, the 53-year-old was coach at VfL Wolfsburg between 2017 and 2018. Schmidt's first coaching assignment in the Bundesliga came with FSV Mainz 05, and in the 2015/16 season, the Mainz-based club qualified for the UEFA Europa League for the first time in their history.
