Dies ist das Ergebnis einer Studie des Ifo-Instituts Dresden im Auftrag der Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit. Für die Studie haben die Ifo-Forscher repräsentative Umfragen der deutschen Bevölkerung seit 1981 ausgewertet.
Etwa vier von zehn Bürgern fühlen sich sehr mit ihrer örtlichen Gemeinde verbunden. Dieser Wert hat sich seit den 1980er Jahren kaum verändert und liegt gleichauf mit der nationalen Verbundenheit mit Deutschland (ebenfalls vier von zehn Bürgern).
„Die Stärke und die Bedeutung der kommunalen Identität der Deutschen hat uns überrascht“, erklärt ifo Forscherin Mona Förtsch. „Die kommunale Identität ist in Deutschland genauso stark ausgeprägt wie die nationale Identität. Allerdings geht nur lokale Verbundenheit mit einem stärkeren ehrenamtlichen Engagement und einem höheren Maß an Toleranz einher.“ Bei Bürgern mit ausgeprägter nationaler Identität ist ein solcher Effekt nicht zu beobachten. On average, citizens who feel a strong bond with their local community go to local elections more often, are more interested in politics, vote less often for populist parties and are more likely to volunteer.
This is the result of a study by the ifo Institute Dresden commissioned by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. For the study, the Ifo researchers have evaluated representative surveys of the German population since 1981.
About four out of ten citizens feel very close to their local community. This value has hardly changed since the 1980s and is on a par with the national attachment to Germany (also four out of ten citizens). "We were surprised by the strength and importance of the Germans' municipal identity," explains ifo researcher Mona Förtsch. "Germany's municipal identity is just as strong as its national identity. However, only local solidarity goes hand in hand with a stronger voluntary commitment and a higher degree of tolerance. Such an effect cannot be observed among citizens with a pronounced national identity.
