Brühl führte das zurück auf die Vorratskäufe, die derzeit viele Menschen angesichts der Corona-Pandemie tätigen. Entsprechend weniger Ware bleibt am Ende, die Supermärkte den Tafeln spenden können. Laut Brühl mussten die sozialen Einrichtungen daher in den vergangenen Tagen "stark improvisieren und konnten dem und der Einzelnen weniger geben". Der Verbandschef wies darauf hin, dass gerade arme Menschen sich große Vorratskäufe gar nicht leisten könnten. Er appellierte an die Hamsterkäufer: "Wer merkt, dass er doch zu viele lang haltbare Vorräte gekauft hat, kann sich gerne an die Tafel in seiner Stadt wenden." Die Tafeln versorgen nach eigenen Angaben regelmäßig 1,6 Millionen Menschen mit Lebensmitteln.
