Klein- und Straßenhändler, Schuhputzer und Tagelöhner - ihnen droht bittere Armut und Hunger. Wer nicht zur Arbeit kommt, wird nicht bezahlt und hat folglich nichts zu essen. Dazu kommen Lebensmittelknappheit und steigende Preise. Die Menschen fürchten sich mindes-tens ebenso vor Hunger wie vor dem Virus.
Quarantäne-Maßnahmen kaum umsetzbar
Quarantäne-Maßnahmen sind häufig kaum umsetzbar. Viele Menschen auf engem Raum sind die Normalität in den armen Bevölkerungsschichten. Oft gibt es weder fließendes Wasser noch Seife oder gar Desinfektionsmittel. Das Risiko, dass die Menschen aus Hunger die Quarantäne verletzen, ist real.
Die Gesundheitssysteme sind völlig überlastet
Ganz zu schweigen von der Möglichkeit bei einer Erkrankung ärztliche Hilfe zu bekommen. Öffentliche Krankenhäuser sind für viele nicht erreichbar. Die Ressourcen und Ausstattungen mit Krankenhäusern, Intensiv-Betten und medizinischem Personal sind in den meisten Ländern Lateinamerikas meilenweit von den westlichen Standards entfernt. Schon ohne Corona gibt es keine ausreichende Versorgung der Bevölkerung. Beispielsweise in Peru stehen 685 Betten mit intensiv medizinischer Ausrüstung für 31 Millionen Menschen zur Verfügung, in Bolivien sind es 323 für 11,3 Millionen Einwohner. In den ärmsten Ländern wie Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti oder Guatemala sieht es noch sehr viel düsterer aus.

nph ist ein internationales, christliches Kinderhilfswerk, das 1954 in Mexiko gegründet wurde. Seitdem wird das einzelne Kind mit seinen Bedürfnissen in den Mittelpunkt der Arbeit gestellt - in den Kinderdörfern und in den Familien der Kinder. Schutzbedürftige Mädchen und Jungen werden aktuell in neun Ländern Lateinamerikas gestärkt und gefördert. Mit der umfassenden Hilfe werden etwa 250.000 Menschen pro Jahr erreicht. Die nph Kinderhilfe Lateinamerika e.V., als deutscher Teil der nph-Familie, wurde 1984 gegründet und umfasst vor allem die Finanzierung der Projekte in Lateinamerika, aber auch die inhaltliche Begleitung der Projekte. The countries in Latin America are also trying to get the corona crisis under control through curfews and contact bans. According to the International Labour Organization, more than half of the working population in Latin America and the Caribbean works informally, i.e. without employment contracts and insurance protection.
Retailers and street vendors, shoeshine boys and day labourers - they are threatened by bitter poverty and hunger. Those who do not come to work are not paid and therefore have nothing to eat. Quarantine measures are often hardly implementable. Many people in a confined space are the norm in the poor sections of the population. Often there is neither running water nor soap or even disinfectants. The risk of people breaching quarantine due to hunger is real.
