"So betrachtet ist die Leistung zwar besser gewesen als im Jahr zuvor, aber unser Ziel wurde nicht erreicht. Wir brauchen uns nicht auf die Schulter zu klopfen, wenn wir unser Ziel nicht erreicht haben", kritisierte Carro. Der Spanier, seit 2018 Klubchef in Leverkusen, duldet keine Zufriedenheit mit dem Status Quo: "Anspruch und Realität liegen bei uns auseinander. Man hat zwei Möglichkeiten: Den Anspruch zu senken, damit er näher an die Realität heranrückt. Oder man arbeitet daran, die Realität dem Anspruch anzugleichen. Und da habe ich eine klare Haltung: Den Anspruch werden wir nicht senken."
Jede Saison unter den Top-4 sein
Es sei die klare Erwartungshaltung der Gesellschafter von Bayer 04, jedes Jahr die Top Vier der Bundesliga und damit die Champions-League-Qualifikation zu erreichen. Deshalb fordert Carro: "Wir müssen besser werden wollen. Auf allen Ebenen." Als Beispiel des Machbaren sieht der ehemalige Bertelsmann-Vorstand die Erfolge von RB Leipzig. Die Sachsen stehen am Ende ihrer vierten Saison in der Fußball-Bundesliga im Halbfinale der Champions League. "Wirtschaftlich weit enteilt sind alleine Bayern München und Borussia Dortmund. Dahinter können und müssen wir uns mit allen streiten", sagt Carro, der nicht akzeptieren will, dass auch noch der Red-Bull-Klub auf Dauer enteilt.
