Zumindest spielt Bezos' einstiges Start-up, das sich zu einem Weltkonzern mit einem gigantischen Börsenwert von fast zwei Billionen Dollar gemausert hat, schon länger eine dominierende Rolle in der Cyberwelt.
Das gilt für Verbraucher, die längst nicht mehr nur Bücher online bei Amazon bestellen, sondern auch von Amazon produzierte Filme "streamen" und die virtuelle Amazon-Assistentin Alexa morgens nach dem Wetter fragen. Es gilt auch für Unternehmen, die ihre Rechnerkapazitäten von Amazon mieten, in der Cloud. Amazon ist überall, und Bezos ist darüber zu einem der reichsten Männer der Welt geworden - ein Rockefeller unserer Tage.
Bezos hört ein wenig auf
Jetzt hört Bezos auf, zumindest ein wenig. Er wird den Vorstandsvorsitz von Amazon an Andy Jassy übergeben, einen Mann der ersten Jahre, der im vergangenen Jahrzehnt das Cloud-Geschäft und damit die wichtigste Gewinnmaschine von Amazon aufgebaut hatte. Jassy arbeitete so eng mit Bezos zusammen, dass er schon mal als dessen "Schatten" bezeichnet wurde.

Der Zeitpunkt für den Stabwechsel ist klug gewählt. Amazon unterstrich mit dem Umsatzrekord im vierten Quartal ihre Ausnahmerolle. Der Konzern profitierte ein weiteres Mal von der Corona-Pandemie, deren Ausgangsbeschränkungen stationäre Wettbewerber besonders im Weihnachtsgeschäft hart trafen. Jassys Sparte erfreute sich gestiegener Nachfrage in einer zunehmend digitalen Geschäftswelt. Bezos kündigte den Rückzug auf der Höhe seines Erfolgs an, wie ein Boxer, der nach einem Weltmeistertitel abtritt.
Noch einige Zeit das Gesicht von Amazon bleiben
Er wird sich wie schon in den Jahren vor der Pandemie stärker auf Sonderprojekte konzentrieren, die ihm wichtig sind, etwa auf sein Raumfahrtunternehmen Blue Origin. Bezos hofft möglicherweise auch darauf, sich der Debatte um eine zu große Macht der Technologiekonzerne und den Ermittlungen der Kartellbehörden zu entziehen. Bei Anhörungen im Kongress wird in Zukunft wohl sein Nachfolger Jassy gegrillt. Aber Bezos wird noch eine Weile das Gesicht von Amazon bleiben. Als Executive Chairman, die Betonung liegt auf Executive, will sich Bezos auch als Vorsitzender des Verwaltungsrats offensichtlich nicht mit einer passiven Rolle bescheiden - abgesehen davon, dass er der größte Einzelaktionär ist. When Jeff Bezos founded an online bookstore called Amazon in Seattle in 1994, he was often asked what the internet was. Bezos quits a little
Now Bezos is quitting, at least a little. He will hand over the chairmanship of Amazon's board to Andy Jassy, a man of the early years who spent the past decade building the cloud business and, with it, Amazon's main profit engine. Jassy worked so closely with Bezos that he was sometimes referred to as his "shadow".

The timing for the change of baton is wisely chosen. Amazon underlined its exceptional role with record sales in the fourth quarter. The group benefited once again from the Corona pandemic, whose exit restrictions hit stationary competitors especially hard in the Christmas business. Jassy's division enjoyed increased demand in an increasingly digital business world. Bezos announced his retirement at the height of his success, like a boxer stepping down after a world title.
Will remain the face of Amazon for some time
He will focus more on special projects that are important to him, such as his space company Blue Origin, as he did in the years before the pandemic. Bezos may also be hoping to avoid the debate about tech companies having too much power and the investigations by antitrust authorities. In future, his successor Jassy will probably be grilled at congressional hearings. But Bezos will remain the face of Amazon for a while yet. As executive chairman, emphasis on executive, Bezos clearly does not want to settle for a passive role even as chairman of the board - apart from being the largest single shareholder. It will be years before Jassy steps completely out of Bezos' shadow.
