Wagner sagte der "Heilbronner Stimme": "Die Entscheidungsfindung ist keine Frage von Sympathie oder Antipathie. Die Entscheidung, wer für die Union als Kanzlerkandidat antritt, muss unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Erfolgsaussichten getroffen werden. Das heißt doch: Söder muss Kanzlerkandidat werden, weil er die weitaus besseren Chancen hat."
Wagner sagte weiter: "Der wirkliche Konflikt spielt sich nicht zwischen CDU und CSU ab. In der CDU selbst findet die Auseinander-setzung in der Kandidatenfrage statt. Innerhalb der Unionsfraktion im Bundestag sprechen sich doch, wenn man die CSU-Abgeordneten abzieht, fast zwei Drittel der CDU-Parlamentarier inzwischen für Söder aus. Die Bundestagsfraktion ist aufgerufen, über die Kandidatur zu entscheiden, sollten sich Laschet und Söder nicht einigen. Ein Beschluss der Fraktion wäre ein politisches Faktum, dem sich kein führender CDU-Politiker mehr entgegenstellen könnte."
Beide Kandidaten müssen sich einigen
Der ehemalige hessische Kultus- und Justizminister betonte mit Blick auf Armin Laschet und Markus Söder: "Die beste Lösung wäre es, wenn sich beide einigen, und zwar unter dem Gesichtspunkt, wer die besten Wahlchancen hat. Mit Verweis auf die Stimmung an der Basis und die Umfragewerte könnte Laschet noch gesichtswahrend Söder das Feld überlassen. Laschet könnte damit sogar seine Position in der CDU und in der Öffentlichkeit stärken. Es will ihn ja niemand in der CDU demontieren. Aber Laschet muss nun seiner Gesamtverantwortung für die Union gerecht werden."
Umfragen sind keine Momentaufnahmen
Zum allgemeinen Stimmungsbild sagte Wagner: "Die Umfragen, die Söder vorne sehen, sind keine Momentaufnahme. Die Umfragen sind seit einem Jahr stabil für den bayerischen Ministerpräsidenten. Die Union liegt gegenwärtig bei etwa 28 Prozent. Ich habe nicht den Eindruck, dass Laschet die Union aus diesem Tief herausholt. Damit wächst die Gefahr, dass wir eine grün-rot-rote Regierung bekommen. Dieser Preis ist zu hoch. Deshalb erwarte ich von unseren Entscheidungsträgern, dass sie das Ohr an der Wählerschaft, an der Basis, an den Mitgliedern haben." Die Ursache dieses Machtkampfes sei tief gehend, so Wagner. "Die Mehrheit der CDU-Mitglieder und auch der Anhänger der CDU wird ignoriert, und solche Nichtbeachtung der Basis kann man sich dauerhaft nicht leisten. Jetzt kommt hinzu, dass sich in der Unionsfraktion als starker Machtfaktor auch zahlreiche Christdemokraten sehr klar für einen Kanzlerkandidaten Markus Söder ausgesprochen haben."
Laschet hat Friedrich Merz und Norbert Röttgen nicht eingebunden
Wagner wirft NRW-Ministerpräsident Laschet Versäumnisse vor: "Wenn sich Laschet nach seiner Wahl zum Bundesvorsitzenden öffentlich hingestellt hätte, mit einem Eckpunktepapier, und eine demonstrative Einbindung von Friedrich Merz und Norbert Röttgen verkündet hätte - das wäre als große Stärke wahrgenommen worden. Nur, einen solchen Auftritt hat er leider versäumt. Normal wäre gewesen, dass er nach seiner Wahl zum Parteichef in Umfragen deutlich zugelegt hätte, aber das ist nicht passiert. Auch das sollte ihm zu denken geben."

Christean Wagner, co-founder of the "Berlin Circle" in the CDU/CSU and long-time CDU parliamentary party leader in Hesse, has taken a clear position in an interview on the question of the candidate for chancellor.

The decision on who will run for chancellor on behalf of the CDU/CSU must be made on the basis of the prospects of success. Wagner went on to say, "The real conflict is not between the CDU and the CSU. Within the CDU itself, the conflict is over the question of the candidate. Within the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, if you subtract the CSU MPs, almost two thirds of the CDU parliamentarians are now in favour of Söder. The Bundestag parliamentary group is called upon to decide on the candidacy if Laschet and Söder do not reach an agreement. A decision by the parliamentary group would be a political fact that no leading CDU politician could oppose."
Both candidates must agree
With regard to Armin Laschet and Markus Söder, the former Hessian Minister of Education and Justice emphasised, "The best solution would be for both to reach an agreement, and to do so from the point of view of who has the best electoral chances. With reference to the mood at the grassroots and the polls, Laschet could still leave the field to Söder while saving face. Laschet could even strengthen his position in the CDU and in the public eye. After all, no one in the CDU wants to dismantle him. But Laschet must now live up to his overall responsibility for the Union."
Polls are not snapshots
On the general mood, Wagner said, "The polls that see Söder ahead are not a snapshot. The polls have been stable for the Bavarian premier for a year. The Union is currently at about 28 per cent. I don't have the impression that Laschet will bring the Union out of this low. This increases the danger that we will get a green-red-red government. This price is too high. That's why I expect our decision-makers to have their ear to the electorate, to the grassroots, to the members." The cause of this power struggle runs deep, Wagner said. "The majority of CDU members and also CDU supporters are being ignored, and you cannot afford such disregard for the grassroots in the long run. Now add to that the fact that in the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, as a strong power factor, numerous Christian Democrats have also spoken out very clearly in favour of a chancellor candidate Markus Söder."
Laschet did not involve Friedrich Merz and Norbert Röttgen
Wagner accuses NRW Prime Minister Laschet of neglect: "If Laschet had stood up publicly after his election as Federal Chairman, with a key points paper, and announced a demonstrative involvement of Friedrich Merz and Norbert Röttgen - that would have been perceived as a great strength. Unfortunately, he failed to make such an appearance. It would have been normal for him to have made significant gains in the polls after his election as party leader, but that did not happen. That should also give him food for thought."
