Der Bonner Virologe Hendrik Streeck hätte sich ein ähnliches Engagement von Politik und Forschung wie gegen Corona auch bei der HIV-Pandemie gewünscht.
In einem Interview mit der "Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung" sagte er, "die Corona-Pandemie hat uns gezeigt, wie gut gegen eine Infektion vorgegangen werden kann, wenn der politische Wille da ist. Dann sind die Gelder da, dann ist der Druck da. Bei Aids war das leider so nicht der Fall, trotz mehr als 35 Millionen Aids-Toten weltweit." Streeck war mehrere Jahre Direktor des Instituts für HIV-Forschung an der Medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Essen. Gegen Corona seien acht Impfstoffe weltweit lizenziert, über 30 seien in der klinischen Testung gewesen.
Aids grassiert in unterentwickelten Regionen
"Bei HIV sind es überhaupt nur acht in dieser Phase in mehr als 30 Jahren gewesen, und am Ende hat keiner die Hoffnungen erfüllt", sagte der Mediziner, der auch Kuratoriums-vorsitzender der Deutschen Aids-Stiftung ist. "Meine Befürchtung ist, dass auf Aids auch deshalb eine geringere Aufmerksamkeit liegt als auf Corona, weil die Krankheit im Wesentlichen in weniger entwickelten Regionen der Welt grassiert", erklärte Streeck, der viele Jahre in der Aids-Forschung in Uganda, Südafrika und den USA tätig war.
