In der Europäischen Union gebe es genug Beispiele für christdemokratische Partien, die nach Wahldesastern zusammengebrochen seien und nie mehr zu alter Stärke zurückgefunden haben. Niedermayer nannte die Democrazia Cristiana in Italien als Beispiel. Am Wochenende hatte CSU-Chef Markus Söder in der "Welt am Sonntag" betont, sollte die Union nicht in der Regierung sein, kämen schwerste Zeiten auf die Partei zu. Als Erstes werde es vor allem in der CDU zu personellen Konsequenzen kommen, betonte Niedermayer. "Ich vermute, dass man einen neuen Parteivorsitzenden braucht, wenn Armin Laschet die Union in die Opposition führt", sagte Niedermayer.
Auswahlprozess der Kanzlerkandidaten reformieren
Auch der Auswahlprozess des Kanzlerkandidaten müsse dringend reformiert werden. "Die Führungsriege der CDU hat hier gegen die Mehrheit der Basis Armin Laschet durchgesetzt. CDU und CSU müssen sich hier endlich ein klares Auswahlverfahren geben, damit so etwas nicht mehr passieren kann." Es seien lange und harte Kursdiskussionen zu erwarten. Die Probleme der Union hingen nicht an nur an der Person Laschet, "sondern schlicht und einfach an der inhaltlichen Entkernung der Partei." Viele Wähler wüssten nicht mehr, wofür die Union heute stehe, betonte Niedermayer.
