Der stellvertretende Vorsitzende der Unionsfraktion Thorsten Frei (CDU) sieht im neuen Bundestag keine Mehrheit für das von SPD, Grünen und FDP vereinbarte Wahlrecht ab 16 Jahren.
"Die Ampel kann eine Absenkung des Wahlalters gar nicht beschließen. Dafür bedürfte es einer verfassungsändernden Zwei-Drittel-Mehrheit. Die sehe ich nicht", sagte Frei der "Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ). Er sehe das Wahlrecht mit 16 Jahren "sehr skeptisch".

Frei sagte der NOZ: "Auch wenn es ohne Zweifel viele stark politisch interessierte Jugendliche gibt, die sich mit den gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen auch intensiv auseinandersetzen, bleibt eines aber ebenfalls richtig: Rechte und Pflichten müssen in Übereinstimmung gebracht werden. Ist es daher vernünftig, wenn man einerseits über die Zukunft unseres Landes mitentscheiden könnte, aber nicht ohne Zustimmung der Eltern einen Handyvertrag abschließen oder auch nur jeden Film im Kino ansehen dürfte? Da habe ich meine Zweifel." Aus seiner Sicht müsste man im Falle der Absenkung des Wahlalters auch über die Absenkung der Grenzen für Strafmündigkeit und Geschäftsfähigkeit sprechen.

Frei told the NOZ: "Even if there are undoubtedly many young people who are strongly interested in politics and who also deal intensively with social conditions, one thing also remains true: rights and duties must be brought into harmony. Is it therefore reasonable if, on the one hand, one could have a say in the future of our country, but was not allowed to sign a mobile phone contract or even watch any film at the cinema without the consent of one's parents? I have my doubts about that." In his view, if the voting age were to be lowered, one would also have to talk about lowering the limits for the age of criminal responsibility and legal capacity.
